I’m currently reading a great book on worship called, FACEDOWN (The Worship Series) by Matt Redman….
After reading a chapter called “The Song of Creation”, I felt he did an incredible job of showing how even CREATION worships the Father by the way God designed it. It put worship into a really unique perspective for me and really spurred me to recognize the wonder and splendor of God as our creator – and how we can use that as even more of a fuel when we respond to God in worship.
When it comes to the many facets that there are to worship – all we really need to do is take a look at the Bible. It shows us what a special role that music has to play in helping us communicate devotion to God
THE OLD TESTAMENT
We are shown many pictures of people of God who gathered using music to convey worship
We are even given a whole Song Book of a150 Psalms of passionate prayer and praise
THE NEW TESTAMENT
Talks of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, making music in our heart to the Lord.
What’s amazing is when we look at the book of REVELATION - It gives us inspiring pictures of all congregational music filling the throne room of God with PURE & CREATIVE worship. Christina Rosetti, a poet & hymn writer said this about the book of Revelation in chapters 4 and 5, “Heaven is revealed to earth as the homeland of music”.
- In these chapters though, we are also reminded that musical praise is not just for humankind.
Before the heavenly thrown, we hear every creature in heaven and under the earth and on the sea, singing (REV 5:13)
- On many different occasions, the scriptures describe the musicality of creation as it responds to the Creator
PSALMS 93:3 says, “The seas lift up their voice”
PSALM96:11-12 says, “Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the feds be jubilant….Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
PSALM 98:8 says, “Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy
ISAIAH 55:!2 says, “The mountains and the hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands
We can go into even more depth – seeing how those who don’t know God even recognize who musical our planet is
You can now find that natural history museums sell recordings of what they’d call Nature Music – Sounds and tones of various creatures, like wolves and whales – accompanied by piano in the background – it’s amazing just how musical the sound they produce is!
- The problem is that it’s being sold and put together by the New Age movemet. And we know that those sounds belong to our ONE TRUE GOD. To me, that just encourages me to worship with everything I have knowing that this is something God has engrained in all of his creation.
A documentary by BBC called The Rhythm of Life featured a musician named Bernie Kraus, who spends his life out in the wild, recording sounds of nature. One of the amazing sounds he shared was something as detailed as the exploding cells of a tree – where they popped perfectly in time with this INCREDIBLY sophisticated and beautiful rhythm.

“CREATION IS ALIVE WITH MUSICALITY; AND EVERY SOUND, NOTE AND STRAIN IS A RESPONSE TO THE DIVINE, POINTING TO THE AUTHOR OF ALL LIFE-GOD HIMSELF” Matt Redman, FACEDOWN (The Worship Series).
The music of God is everywhere
PSALM 19:1-4 Says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the end of the world.
ROMANS 1:20 says, “Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
That scripture really helped me to realize that we are without excuses to Worship God, our creator. When we read Psalm 148, “Praise him Sun and Moon” – it’s really neat to look at this verse through a scientific lens.
The sun burns up 4 million tons of IT’S OWN mass EVERY SECOND. That’s the equivalent to 100 billion hydrogen bombs exploding. As if that’s not mind blowing all on it’s own – even the sun is burning up that much of it’s own mass each second, scientists say the sun will still last another 5 or 6 billion years. The sun brings us so much life, but more than anything, the psalmist sees it as a proclaimer of the great and unending worth of God.
PSALM 148 goes on to say, “Praise him all you shining stars”
And the even cooler part is the sun is just one average sized star in our galaxy of 100 billion stars. Scientists believe there are at least 140 billion other GALAXIES. We are only seeing the tiniest glimpse of the vastness of our creator – there are so many more elements of creation that worships God that we cant even see
The take away from hearing all of this tonight is this:
THE MORE WE HEAR THIS SONG, THE MORE IT POINTS US ONCE AGAIN TO THE MAGNIFICANCE OF GOD
GOD IS BOTH THE AUTHOR AND RECEIVER OF THIS MAGNIFICENT ORCHESTRATION OF PRAISE – ALL JOINING IN ONE SONG, THE ETERNAL ANTHEM OF OUR CREATOR.
