Before and After

Prayer

Before & After

Lesson 2: Prayer

Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees. ~ Corrie Ten Boom

Prayer is:

·         Conversation with God

·         The interaction of the heart and mouth talking with or asking from God

Heartfelt prayer knows that God is:

·         Willing to communicate with us

·         Willing to direct us

·         Able and willing to meet our needs

·         Willing comfort us

Things We Accomplish In Prayer:

·         Commune With God

·         Make Requests

·         Humble Ourselves

·         Move Mountains

·         Cast Our Cares On God

2 Kings 20:1 About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message: “This is what the LORD says: Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness.” New Living Translation

2 Kings 20:2 When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, New Living Translation

2 Kings 20:3 “Remember, O LORD, how I have always been faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly, always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept bitterly. New Living Translation

2 Kings 20:4 But before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard, this message came to him from the LORD: New Living Translation

2 Kings 20:5 “Go back to Hezekiah, the leader of my people. Tell him, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you, and three days from now you will get out of bed and go to the Temple of the LORD. New Living Translation

2 Kings 20:6 I will add fifteen years to your life, and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my own honor and for the sake of my servant David.’” New Living Translation

Heartfelt Prayer Drastically Changes Things In Our Lives

Our prayer and God’s mercy are like two buckets in a well; while one ascends, the other descends.  ~ Arthur Hopkins

Guidelines For Prayer:

·         Realizing there are different kinds of prayer

·         These guidelines are for asking God in prayer

One: Know God’s Will

Prayer is an effort of will.  ~ Oswald Chambers

Two: Pray With Your Heart

1 Samuel 1:13 Now Hannah was speaking from her heart. Although her lips were moving, her voice was inaudible. Eli therefore thought she was drunk. New English Translation

The fewer the words the better prayer.  ~ Martin Luther

Three: Believe You Receive

Mark 11:23 I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.

Mark 11:24 I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. New Living Translation

Four: Be Thankful

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. New English Translation

Questions To Ask:

·         Do you know what God says about your situation?

·         Do you know how to get your heart engaged in prayer?

·         Do you know how to believe you receive?

·         Are you thanking God for what you prayed for?
