We Choose Joy

October 29, 2023

Pastor Ryan Cathers

We choose joy.

"If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." - C.S. Lewis

The greatest things this life has to offer are limited and temporary expressions of that which you were made to experience completely and continuously forever.

Q. What is the chief end of man?

Q. What is the chief end of man? A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Isaiah 43:1 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ...6 I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” English Standard Version

Romans 11:36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. English Standard Version

1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. English Standard Version

Life only has meaning if it is a means to something.

"God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him." - John Piper

You glorify best what you enjoy most.

John 15:10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! New Living Translation

Our greatest joy is found in bringing God the greatest glory.

Emotions may be in the car, but they don't have to be in the driver seat. They are helpful internal signals that can be superseded by joy.

My joy isn't based on circumstances. My joy is based on who God is and what He's done for me in Christ. Therefore, I will have an attitude of gratitude.

I rejoice because I know God is working all things together for my good. I know God's working even when I can't see it happening.

The joy of the Lord produces strength. It renews passion for my purpose.

Things grow best when fertilized. I will focus on the growth, not the stink.
